This book has something for everyone. There is a wide range of themes and since the designs are generally small they have a number of uses alone (keyfobs, bookmarks, placemats, ornaments, etc) or they can be combined with other designs for larger works.
The charts are very easy to read - they are large and are charted using both symbols and colored squares so you can get a sense of the color of the finished piece while still being able to easily tell which thread you should use for each stitch.

I do agree with another reviewer that the lack of pictures of the finished pieces is unfortunate but it does not prevent me from recommending this book (but it did 'knock off' one star).

This book will send your cross stitching mind awhirl with ideas. The book is based loosely on mosaic tiles. For experienced stitchers, it has some designs I've not seen in other books. For beginning stitchers, the designs aren't difficult to stitch, but not enough color pictures of finished work to show how to put blocks together into a design. You will need some graph paper to make the best use of this book. The layout of this book is beautifully done with each two page spread color themed. My current favorites are the fleur-de-lis pillow and English garden designs. Happy Stitching!

For beginning stitchers, the designs aren’t difficult to stitch, but not enough color pictures of finished work to show how to put blocks together into a design. You will need some graph paper to make the best use of this book. The layout of this book is beautifully done with each two page spread color themed. My current favorites are the fleur-de-lis pillow and English garden designs. Happy Stitching!

To my mind, anything advertised as a kit usually includes most if not all of the necessary items to complete the product. This kit does not include the cloth or the thread. Had I known I was only going to receive the pattern and charms, I would have passed on this product.

This is a fabulous program! I purchased this program for my girl friend that likes to do cross stitching. She plans on making me a very nice cross stitch pattern on my favorite hunting jacket.

          The best designs available !
Toured several US bookstores in July and tried to find a new GOOD design book. Guess what they always suggested? This book and I already had bought it in Europe.

The book is my most tresured and used possessions. I also do my own designs but often use 501 Cross Stich Designs for a refrence.Recently I found an other use for the instructions , Iam using the designs as audioscope paterns for WebTv and have had many complinents on the finished pictures, just to bad thatPC's can not read them, they are missing out. The book is definitely my most used craftbook, with the many designs for all occassions.

This book has been around for some time now and since I'm not partial to small designs because I prefer big projects,I never got around to buying this book, but since Amazon has introduced its new and wonderful "Look Inside" feature I got the chance to look through some of its pages and found that the designs though small are rich with color and detail. The designs are original they range from playful and fun to sophisticated and fancy. The charts are of good size,in black and white but very clear to follow. The photographs of all the end results are included. Some of the designs can be done in as little as 15 minutes, the most complicated in two hours.I'm glad I bought this book,I've already finished a simple project with one of its designs which only took me an hour and a half. With 501 designs I'm sure to find a couple of hundred more to work on.

I loved 555 Fabulous Cross-Stitch Patterns so brought this book by Ms. Kooler. Imagine how disappointed I was when I brought this book and the first 555 designs were the same as in 555 Fabulous Cross-Stitch Patterns. The covers were even the same. I feel ripped off by the publisher. But that said I still love the designs. They great for small bazaar projects such as sachets, magnet, bookmarks, etc. They're perfect for the beginner and can be done using leftover floss.

I just completed this x-stitch for my grandson's 4th B-day and he loved it! I had never worked on black fabric and the black stitching on black was exhausting to the eyes. A good spot lamp and shorter sewing sessions worked well. The kit was great and once framed it made a great addition to my g-son's room.

Heather is inspiring for a stitcher of any age. Her designs are new and innovative, some small enough to be finished in one sitting. She sees cross stitch in places where no one else has and she opens her mind - and yours - to possibilities. Worth every penny! I have been stitching for over 20 years and just love this book,a new stitcher will, too.

I'll be honest, I ordered this by mistake. I had been looking at a few embroidery books and ditzily clicked on the wrong one.

I'm rather glad I did. The book is put together well, with a nice overview of the basics of cross-stitch before heading into the patterns. Colors and placement are suggested... but the idea seems to be take Heather's initial plans and run with them. Some of the patterns are not in my own taste (frankly, I don't see myself making a cross-stitched flyswatter, but hey, that's just me.) but others will be motifs I'll be using for years (her wind design is already going onto a well loved denim jacket for this spring). In addition to well written directions and clear cut graphs, the book has a ton of unique placement suggestions and even some MP3 playlists to keep you in tune with your stitching.

If you aren't looking for cutesy sampler patterns (there are a few... but she does avoid the old standbys and tries for some new ground) and want to go beyond wall art needlepoint, this is a pretty good place to start. Patches, buttons, and hidden suprises for your favorite old pair of jeans are all supplied.

If you are looking for complicated color patterns however, I'd give it a miss. The author relies more on varigated threads and multi-hued backgrounds to add sparkle to her designs. A good way for begingers to get some extra bang for their buck when first stepping into the cross-stitch world.

I've been waiting for Stitch Graffiti for a while, and I certainly wasn't disappointed! I love Heather Holland-Daly's designs, and if you haven't seen them before, check out her website: www.monsterbubbles.com (and no I'm not getting royalties for talking her up). She uses brilliant colors and eclectic designs, often quoting poetry or music in her peices. Her patterns are funky, youthful, and fresh - without being tacky.

The book has an obligatory cross stitch lesson in the beginning, but further on, she assumes that if you're buying a book about cross stitch you're either going to know a little bit about it or refer back to the guide in the beginning if you don't - she doesn't talk down to the experienced stitcher. The majority of the book is patterns, both small and large, and ideas about where to stitch. Not everything has to go into a frame. Her patterns are relatively simple, but still beautiful. There are a few that could be done in a few hours, and a few that would take me more than a month. She doesn't cram her book with piddly little projects that just take up space!

One of the things I probably appreciated the most in Holland-Daly's book was the DMC conversion on each of her patterns. She uses hand-dyed and threads and cloth (and gives some good advice on how to finish and care for work using these materials) and recommends her favorites for each pattern, but also gives DMC thread "equivalents" for those of us who might not have access to special materials.

This is a very accessible book for the beginning stitcher and a breath of fresh air for the stitcher who's tired of making the same old samplers. Get brave with your cross stitch!

I’ve been waiting for Stitch Graffiti for a while, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed! I love Heather Holland-Daly’s designs, and if you haven’t seen them before, check out her website: http://www.monsterbubbles.com (and no I’m not getting royalties for talking her up). She uses brilliant colors and eclectic designs, often quoting poetry or music in her peices. Her patterns are funky, youthful, and fresh – without being tacky.

          Definitely one of a kind!
One of the reasons I bought this book was due to the really interesting heart found on the cover as well as the rave reviews this book got. I really ended up loving it!

I was not happy with the size of the graphs. It can not be worked unless you enlarged and clarified first. The print was fuzzy. I do not recommend this book to anyone.

This review is from: Donna Kooler's 555 Timeless Cross-Stitch Patterns (Hardcover)

This book has designs that aren't really any different than the other Kooler books. That said, I bought it anyway, to add it to my collection. There is a snowman alphabet sampler that is cute, but I'd really rather do the snowmen without the letters. There are the usual cutesy teddy bears, etc. Most of the designs would fall under the "cutesy" or "sweet" description. I hate to say it, but I've seen better designs. If you have a huge collection, this book probably won't add anything new to your design portfolio. If you're just starting, I'd pick something with a wider variety of designs.

I really liked this book. There are some great ideas that span easy to medium hard, but the real kicker here is the abundance of variation patterns that are attached so if you don't like the picture they show but like the idea (x-stitched pillowcases, small tablecloths for example) you can change the motif to one of the many they offer. Some are quite striking. I think that this book is good for beginners and most of the patterns are easy or quickly made and some are for more advanced work & require more effort or practice.

I really enjoyed this book it has the history of stitching and how it remains both a pratical and asthetic art form.
i learned some of the basic techniques and how to finish a project for framing. i really enjoy it. i think it'a good book for any stitcher's library who is interested in the basics to hardanger to the history of thier craft.

This is a beautifully illustrated introduction to the art of cross-stitch and counted thread needlework. Included in this "Needlework 101" type overview is information on cross-stitch, pattern darning, blackwork, pulled and drawn thread work Assisi work and Hardanger. There is a nice discussion on materials and equipment, fabric, fibers, working with a frame, charting your own designs, etc. The second section teaches various cross-stitch techniques and stitches.

Charts include alphabets, fruit, animals, florals, sea life, borders and more. The book then presents more than twenty-five creative projects that include step-by-step directions and color charts, as well as a library of seventy-five embroidery motifs.

There are nice color photographs of the finished pieces and excellent instructions. The charts, however, appear as in an artist's sketch book. They look like colored pencil on a yellow grid without symbols. Some of the charts are quite small and you would likely need to create an enlarged color working copy. But most of the charts are a good size, and the lack of symbols should not be a problem.

This looks like a nice introductory book that can take a stitcher from the beginning to intermediate stages of counted thread work.

I like the idea of Subversive Cross Stitch. However, there's nothing in here that you couldn't do with a generic alphabet and motif pattern book.

I have been cross stitching for 25 years and samplers have been my main interest for most of them. I mostly wanted this book for my library as it is certainly not your typical sampler. When I got the book I browsed through it and found the cross stitching ordinary. Of course the 'interest' is that the sayings are shocking on these sweet little designs. I wasn't so impressed. However, all 4 of my kids who were home for Christmas thought this book was HILARIOUS and my daughter needed to know -immediately- how to cross stitch! A month later my book is well used and real hit at my house!!

          Handy-sized, profane inspiration
I used to deplore cross stitch -- why not needlepoint if you like counting squares in a grid, or do crewel work if you like embroidery?

I love to Cross Stitch, but the cutesy patterns you find in most stitch shops and craft stores just aren't my thing. Wasn't I lucky to stumble upon ths awesome book where my homey side can meet my inner b*tch. My workmates are fighting over this one. All I can say is if you stitch- - get it!!! Instructions are included and they are terrific.

          1.0 out of 5 stars
Not very comprehensive - leaves a lot out!
This book is worth getting only if you are an intermediate/advanced stitcher who is interested in the pattern library in the back of the book.

I just received a contact from the owner of this company. Not only did she refund my money but REQUESTED THAT I NOT RETURN THE KIT. I still do not care for the kit but THIS COMPANY HAS SUPERB CUSTOMER SERVICE AND I ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO TRY ANY OF THEIR PRODUCTS. i WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE THE STAR RATING TO 4 BUT AM UNABLE TO DO SO IN THIS EDIT.

I ordered this kit and it was received in about 5 days. Then my trouble began. This is a kit with split dowels through which you pass your canvas then it is tightened. The longer dowels were 1/16" smaller (doesn't sound like much)and fit too loosely. The side stablilizers could not be tightened enough to hold the canvas.

Another thing, small wing nuts are used as tighteners and, as a senior, caused pain to my hands when trying to screw them tightly. When I tightened the stabilizers, it caused the cross pieces holding the canvas to bow and the canvas slipped out of the center area.

I checked this out from the library to get some new ideas for gifts. The designs are gorgeous-- lots of color pictures of each design and how they can be used as gifts. Most of the designs are fairly simple (or quick) even for the beginner, but are also beautiful and well-illustrated.

If you are a beginner, (I'm an intermediate stitcher)get this book! I learned some new stitches I didn't understand how to do. Now I'm going to buy it!

This product makes cross stitching so easy! Unlike the cirles that hold your fabric together that leaves lines in your work, the scrollframe makes it so you don't get those lines. Plus, this kit fits most sizes of needlework. It comes with different size dowels and it is very easy to assemble. As you work you can scroll the backing up or down to get where you need to. Right now I have two different projects going at the same time. Plus, the price of this scroll frame is perfect. If you were to go to a craft store you would be spending at least 30 bucks to get a good quality scroll frame. The difference is, this one makes different sizes. The ones in the stores that I found only do one size so you would have to buy more. This is definetly worth every penny.
